The Client

The client is a US-based global biopharmaceutical leader addressing a wide range of complex health issues with critical medicines and solutions. Operating globally, the company focuses on immunology, oncology, neuroscience, eye care, and aesthetics.

The Challenge: A Business Rule Landscape Too Complex to Navigate

Within the analytics and business insights ecosystem, business rules are the engine behind planning, insights, and performance tracking. Thousands of business rules fuel KPI calculations, data transformations, forecasting engines, and performance reporting. Over years of expansion, these rules accumulated across multiple systems, teams, and codebases, each addition increasing fragmentation. As the analytics landscape matured, these rules became deeply embedded in pipelines and applications, slowing the business’s ability to adapt. Legacy systems and rigid architecture slowed updates.

Dispersed ownership and manual processes led to inconsistent execution and weak audit control. To continue moving at the pace of market demand, the company needed a more transparent, scalable, and governed approach for managing rules across its enterprise ecosystem.

The Solution: A Low-Code, AI-Enabled Platform for Intelligent Rule Management

Xebia collaborated closely with the client to design and implement a metadata-driven Business Rules Management System (BRMS) that brought business and technical teams onto one platform. The new BRMS centralizes governance while enabling users to create, test, validate, and deploy rules intuitively, supported by automated workflows, consistent archetypes, and robust traceability. The system introduced a structured rule hierarchy covering parameters, transformation logic, reference data, integrations, and metrics, ensuring standardization and reuse across the ecosystem.

Built on low-code and Gen AI–enabled components, the system supports intuitive rule configuration, validation, versioning, and simulation. Automated workflows, SQL generation, and dependency visualization streamline management and speed deployment.

The rollout followed a phased roadmap that delivered value from the start: initially introducing low-code rule configuration and reference data management on OutSystems, followed by advanced features such as automated rule extraction, visualization, AI-assisted governance, automating code scanning, classification, and scaling for larger data volumes. Each phase strengthened transparency and scalability, shaping a unified rule ecosystem designed to evolve with the business. Guided by Xebia’s principles of scalability, automation, self-service, and agility, the BRMS evolves continuously with business needs, enabling transparent and efficient rule management.

The Results: Clarity, Consistency, and Confidence Across the Enterprise

With the new BRMS in place, the company now operates on a single governed platform for managing business rules across MABI, improving collaboration, accountability, and data confidence. The platform's scalable, transparent framework empowers users to manage, govern, and utilize business rules effectively while driving agility, accuracy, and trust in every decision.

Looking Ahead

The next steps include deeper automation, visualization, and AI-assisted governance, positioning the organization as a leader in intelligent rule management and enterprise data operations. With a strong data foundation in place, the organization is primed to unlock predictive insights, accelerate decision cycles, and strengthen enterprise-wide trust in analytics.
