Should I follow the CSM or PSM course?

Xebia Academy offers two different training paths to become a Scrum Master - Certified Scrum Master (CSM) and Professional Scrum Master (PSM). Wondering which one to choose?

Both training courses provide a solid foundation in Scrum; its values, principles and the Scrum Master accountabilities. Both trainings are based on the Scrum Guide and what you will learn is pretty similar. Since the Scrum Guide is moving from software delivery focus to a more generic product delivery both trainings also move in that direction. The goal of both trainings is to give you more knowledge about the accountabilities of the Scrum Master and how the Scrum Master serves the Organization, the Product Owner and the Developers.

Certified Scrum Master Training

After successfully completing the two-day CSM training, you’ll have 90 days (and two attempts) to take and pass the online exam to become a Certified Scrum Master. Certification gives you access to a renewable, two-year membership with Scrum Alliance. And, as a Certified Scrum Master (CSM), you can continue your educational development to become a Certified Scrum Professional (CSP), Certified Team Coach (CTC), Certified Enterprise Coach (CEC) and Certified Scrum Trainer (CST).  Read more about certifications on the Scrum Alliance website.

Professional Scrum Master Training

After successfully completing the two-day Professional Scrum Master training, you’ll receive a password for PSM I assessment, and a PSM II assessment password at a discounted price. The passing score for the PSM I assessment is 85%. Should you, in any case, need to redo the assessment then Scrum.org offers a free second try. Scrum.org maintains a public list of all certified PSM I, PSM II and PSMIII holders. The Professional Scrum Master (PSM) certification does not expire and you can continue your educational development to become a Professional Scrum Practitioner (PSP) and Professional Scrum Expert (PSE). Read more about certifications on the Scrum.org website.

And how do I make a choice?
The choice between the CSM and the PSM is a personal one. Both trainings and certifications are seen equally valuable in the community. Our advice is to rather choose a trainer than a certification. All our trainers are certified by either Scrum.org or Scrum Alliance and they are experts in the Scrum environment.
